Yaroslav Vasilyev-Apostol is a fine artist specialising in photography from St.Petersberg. He uses a mixture of multiple exposure photographs and mixed media to create striking abstracted portraits. The grainy finish gives the image a dark and gritty look, adding mystery to the pieces. Each still has props and shapes cutting through the empty backgrounds, adding depth to the aesthetic.
In my own visual exploration I have been looking at ways to represent the concept of spiritual darkness, and fear of the unknown. As well as layering video footage, I’ve found that adding grain to the footage gives a sense of incompleteness. Yaroslav Vasilyev-Apostol’s work has inspired me to look at each still or pose as a piece of art; I would like my stills to stand alone as beautiful pieces as well as being part of the bigger picture.
